Acrobat Reader Display Problems

Issue: When displaying Acrobat PDF files in Internet Explorer, documents are displayed incomplete,  or you computer hangs.

Solution: Update to the latest version of Acrobat Reader, or disable the web browser integration option of the Adobe Acrobat software.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0

  2. From the Acrobat Reader menu, choose File/Preferences/General
  3. In the General preferences dialog, near the bottom right, disable the Web Browser Integration checkbox
Adobe Acrobat 5.0
  1. Start Adobe Acrobat (typically Start/Programs/Adobe Acrobat)
  2. From the Acrobat menu, choose Edit/Preferences/General
  3. In the list to the left, select Options
  4. Disable Display PDF in Browser check box (under Web Browser Options)

The location of these settings might be different for other versions, but you can expect them always somewhere near General Preferences.

Side effects: When web browser integration is disabled, and you click on a link to a PDF document, you will be asked whether you want to "Save the file", or "Open from it's current location". When you open the document, it will display in a separate window.

More Information: The problems result from known version incompatibilities beetween Microsoft Internet Explorer and the Adobe Acrobat software. You can find more information on the Adobe Systems Inc. Website.

If you want to keep the Internet Explorer integration enabled, you can save the PDF documents by right-clicking on the link, and choose "Save As.." from the popup menu.
